The family has set a goal of $2,500 for funeral expenses. By Wednesday morning, nearly twice that amount has been raised.
The accident occurred around 8:40 p.m. Sunday near the I-84 Diner near Old Glenham Road, when a 53-year-old Fishkill motorist failed to see the family attempting to cross the road from the north shoulder and struck them, state police said. Police announced on Tuesday that charges will not be brought against the man, who was driving an SUV.
The mother, Zuleyma Lopez, 28, and her child, Abel E. Torres-Lopez, 10 months, were declared dead at the scene, the three other children were transported to Westchester Medical Center.
Family member Charlene Sisco said the immediate family does not have the money for funeral expenses.
"It's just tragic and maybe this would help remove some of the burdens," she said.
The other children, Shayla, 10; Riccardo, 8, and Alan 4, all remain hospitalized with serious injuries, she added.
"Hopefully people will help and any money left over can be used for the children's medical expenses or their future," Sisco said.
Arrangements have not been made: "Everyone is overwhelmed at this point, she added.
